Malaysian Powerhouse – Firebrands
The Penang floorball club Firebrands will be competing in the men’s Elite category in next month’s Singapore Floorball Open II.
The Firebrands defended their championship title at the 2018 Penang Floorball League that took place in June and is hungry for their next victory. Many Firebrands players make up the Penang state team, that have been national champions of the Merdeka Cup – the Malaysian floorball league – for five years running.
Firebrands is associated with the secondary school Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Hamid Khan where most of their players were from. The team has a mixture of young and old players, but that does not deter them from sharing great camaraderie on and off the court.
Although floorball is still new to the Penang scene, they have seen considerable growth in recent years. More Malaysian states are having the game introduced in schools, which brings bright prospects to the future success of floorball in Malaysia. This is a result of hard work by various Firebrands members. One of them is 24-year-old Zephaniah Chong who currently coaches the U21 Men’s Penang team.
The floorball club was founded in 2008. Apart from their men’s team, there is also a women’s team and a men’s development team. Altogether, Firebrands has been incredibly active in the Malaysian floorball scene and also outside of the country. The men’s team participated in the first Singapore Floorball Open last year and are gunning to challenge themselves further and meet tougher opponents this year.
Faces of the team
The team packs a punch but look out for these three key players at Singapore Floorball Open II. The first is 24-year-old defender Steven Ong. The full-time engineer is known for putting his body on the line and playing with his heart. Next, goalkeeper Toh Wei Giap, 20, is a fierce shot-stopper that offers the size and quick reflexes that will bring the team far. Last but not least, 27-year-old Ian Terence Lovell is a forward notorious for his physically imposing presence and a killer shot instinct.
Words from the team
Firebrands player Zachary Choo Zhi Yung shared that the team is “looking forward to facing all teams to gain experience that (they) may not be able to experience back home in Penang”.
Watch out for the Malaysian Powerhouse Firebrands in the second edition of Singapore Floorball Open, that will take place from 27 to 29 July.
See you there!
